BURLINGTON, Vt. — One woman has been killed and another is in critical condition after a cleaver attack in Burlington.
Police said Aita Gurung, 34, of Burlington, was arrested and charged in the death of his wife, Yogeswari Khadka, 32.
Investigators said Gurung attacked her with a meat cleaver on Hyde Street shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday.
“I heard a blood-curdling scream that sounded like it came from a woman,” Sam Rollo said. “There was a younger woman laying in the driveway, lifeless, and the pool of blood was bigger than her.”
Police said Gurung also attacked Khadka’s mother, Thulsa Rimal, 54. She suffered severe injuries to her head.
Rimal was listed in critical but stable condition at UVM Medical Center. The couple’s 8-year-old child was at school at the time and was not hurt.
Investigators have also not said what may have led to the attack. Gurung was briefly held at gunpoint outside of a resident’s home before police arrived.
Chief Brandon del Pozo and State’s Attorney Sarah George also visited the scene. “The incident does not indicate an ongoing public safety risk to the community,” del Pozo said.
Officers said Gurung sought police attention for mental health reasons last Saturday. He told police he had concerns about his deteriorating relationship with his wife.
Gurung was brought to UVM Medical Center for treatment. His father-in-law told police Gurung was voluntarily admitted for a mental health evaluation. He was discharged Thursday at his own request before the attack.
Gurung will be arraigned Friday. Police will release more information about the case during a press conference Friday.
